The best investment we’ve made in our landscaping is decorative concrete borders. Though this is gaining popularity here in Northwest Ohio, curbing companies have come and gone for the last 20 years. So how do you know if the company you decide to hire is going to be here next year to stand behind their one-year warranty? I’ve done my homework on this subject and would like to share what I have learned.
When chosing a contractor you need to consider more than the price. New curbers have a tendency to charge less than the experienced curbing company. One reason is that a new curber most likely has not considered expenses realistically. That is one reason why new curbers have a difficult time staying in business. They undercharge for their product hoping to get their name out and find within two years that they can’t make money and are forced out of business.
You might say, concrete is concrete and that it will last a long time. If I can get my curb for the least amount of money today and the curber goes out of business next year, I still have my curb and I paid less for it.
What happens if you decide you want to make changes? Or if you decide to put an addition on your house and re-landscape? What if you do experience a problem? Who do you call?
An experienced company who has been in business for three or more years has the expertise to provide professional installation of quality curb. They have experienced a variety of situations and have developed solutions. They are no longer experimenting on your job.
Things to consider when hiring a curbing contractor.
- How long has the company been in business?
- How do they warrant their product?
- Are they a member of the Better Business Bureau?
- How many installations do they do a year? The more installations, the more experience the installers have.
- Is curbing their only business? You know the saying….A jack of all trades, a master of none. Make sure your contractor is a master of his trade.
- Check out their website. Be aware that some companies are using a template made for curbing companies. Though the site is very well done and very informative, some curbing companies have not replaced the template photos with photos of their own work. Check out http://www.globalwebpro.com/gallery.php to see the templates and decide for yourself if the curbing company you are investigating is using their own photos.
- Ask for references, addresses of completed jobs
- Ask to see photos of their work
